The Kharkov R-10 is a laser-cut kit designed by Tom Nallen. His model won the Flying Aces Club WWII Mass Launch at the 2000 Nationals. This is a super light 1:22 scale kit designed to go together quickly and fly great. Pictured below in both the standard green and the winter white schemes. The prototype has a wing area of approximately 80 square inches. Weight including rubber motor, clay ballast, and 8" plastic propeller is 44.4 grams.
The Kharkov R-10 was a low-wing Russian light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft designed by the Kharkov Aviation Institute (KhAI). The KhAI developed a whole family of high-speed aircraft from transports to bombers designed and assembled by teachers and students under the direction of Iosif Grigorievich Neman. Various modifications of the original KhAI-1 aircraft were made from 1932 through 1938 at which time Neman was imprisoned and the project came to and end. The KhAI-5 was a prototype of the fast photo reconnaissance aircraft. It featured numerous innovations developed for KhAI-1 aircraft, including retractable gear, wing and control surfaces with stressed skin, an internal bomb/camera bay, a new type of gunner's turret, and a remotely controlled camera capable of making shots at 80 degrees relative to flight direction. The Kharkov R-10 was the production version of the KhAI-5.
This free flight rubber powered kit includes a full-size rolled CAD drawn plan, laser cut balsa parts and hand-picked balsa strip wood, FAI rubber, TissueCal™ markings, vacuum-molded canopy and turret, 8" E-B propeller, EBM thrust bearing, and Easy Built Lite tissue. To build this model you will need a building board set, hobby knife, fine sandpaper, and glue.
CUSTOMER BUILDS & INFO

"Here are the photos of the Kharkov in finished form. It did weigh out at 42 grams with rubber. I used Esaki tissue misted with white primer (on the side towards the frame) and used black chalk to simulate wear. A small brush and Q-tip helped streak it across the wings. It's not hard to do, but I recommend some practice on scrap pieces because once it is applied, it can't be removed or changed!" - FS Gilbert

"A fun build! I added clear fuselage windows to aid in motor installation. Wing filets still need touch up. Test flights are promising for sure. Thanks for producing a great kit! You guys are awesome!" - Jeff Renz

"The stab on this one has been hinged. Haven't flown this yet, but I did give it my "bedroom test".....that is I gently launch it just to see if it'll fly straight without a tendency of a severe stall or dive. This one came out perfect.....a nice straight float. Under power? Who knows? Time will tell. Thanks for a great model." - Jeff Horowitz

"I used only two magnets, one on the wing's trailing edge, the other on the fuselage and one pin in the leading edge. It is perfect. I believe it is 75 grams, with 6.28 dm² of wing area at 11.9 grams/dm². The motor is a small brushless electric motor of only 5 grams from hobbyking.com. The power is 4 amps under 8 volt. That means 160 grams of thrust theoretically, much too much for the plane. They now have a smaller one of 2 grams." - Angelo Favaro

"Here are photos of my R-10 just completed. Pretty light model. I ended up just painting the strips on the canopy and turret. Very nice kit thanks!" John Majane

"Weight is 37 grams without rubber, and finish is airbrushed enamels." - Mike Stewart

"I added copper wire to the stab for some up in the tail. I hope you like it." - Bob Overcash
